All weekend meets start with the painful Friday night slog out of London.. This meet was no exception with a sloooow journey up the M1 which the rozzers had shut from J14 to J15. Marvellous! Everyone arrived safely though a few hours later and in relatively good spirits so no harm done. On Saturday morning a walking party consisting of Michael, Petra, Ian, Sarah and Michele walked from Ccapel Curig over the back towards Tryfan and the Glyders. Winds exceeded 60 mph which made the going tough - not to mention the very wet boggy ground underfoot. There was the usual faffing at the start (Michele was glad to find after years of absence from the MMC that the faff factor was still in evidence) before the path was found - but from then on a great walk, stopping only for a short time to a) wait for Michele to work up the enthusiasm to cross a great yawning chasm stretching oh at least half a metre ;), b) laugh at Michael who athletically leapt over a massive stretch of bog only to fall gracefully short and end up kneeling in it c) stop for hot chocolate/coffee.
The other walking party - Robin, Stefan, Tony T & Anna - walked up Eldir Fawr from the back of the hut through the Llanberis mine works mostly finding their own route, skirting round to Foel-goch before heading off down the hill following their noses, sadly finding the Vatnor pub closed they headed back through the mine works back to the hut with circular route taking about 6 hours.
Lots of road side bouldering for Simon M-C, Nev, Paras and Verity. On arriving they found some of the problems were inaccessible due to the swamp like ground beneath them but there were no problems with the rock being wet as the wind was blowing strongly enough to pick the bouldering mats up and blow them towards the swamp. Lots of nice problems, starting on Central ramp a juggy V1, then roadside righthand V2, Pocket wall V3 (which Simon admits to cheating on, reducing the grade to V2), Ramp central V2, ramp lefthand, then they moved round the back of the boulder and did a lot of V0/1s that didn't get a grade before wasting the rest of the morning on a V3 that doesn't have a name but the guide book describes as "looks easy doesn't it" sadly it wasn't with Nev, Paras and Simon all crying off claiming tiredness after far too many attempts. Having run out of steam they settled down on the bouldering mats for a long lunch whist being pestered by a friendly seagull. The afternoon had more of the same finishing on Browns Crack with Neville being the only one to make it up this classic V1.
Brendon, Chuck and Nick went biking at Coed-y-Brenin, doing the Tarw (Bull) trail and then the Tepmtiwr (taster) trail. Brendan apparently had a grizzly crash and the scars to show for it but fortunately for him the damage done to Simon's bike was only minor. Phew! Could have been a few more grizzly scars otherwise! Debbie, Claire and Beatriz also went biking, doing the Marin trail at Betws-y-Coed. No mishaps, punctures or falls Nick professing his amazement to the girls at their fine biking prowess.
By the time the sun was starting to set (at about 3.30pm in Wales!), everyone except the walkers headed back via The Heights Hotel in Llanberis. After couple of drinks, the MMC group flexed their combined intellectual muscles to devise a cunning plan for dinner. Few more pints then take away pizza!! Yum!! The execution of the plan started well with the beers going down nicely, but on arrival at the village pizza shop they were told the shop had run out of dough for making pizzas. Not being the types to fall at the first hurdle the MMC party put their intellectual prowess into action yet again and decided that they didn't need dinner straight away they could wait for more dough to be made and so they arranged for the dozen or so pizzas to be delivered to the hut. Cunning!! Back in the hut much wine was drunk, the pizzas arrived and were scoffed down and then the games began. Twister was a big hit with most. Ian was slow to get in to the spirit refusing to leave his chair as he put his left foot red then right foot green. Then it was down to the old favourites of table climbing and the well known and loved game of put the beer car as far away from you as possible without stepping over the line or touching the floor with your hands. Other entertainment for the evening included a sock-puppet show and an X-Factor rendition of Feelings by Chairman Beaker. Paras decided to collect iris scan information of all members with his digital camera, presumably for next years membership card. On Sunday Simon managed to recruit more people to the bouldering cause and Simon, Nick, Verity, Debbie, Neville, Mike and Petra going to the RAC boulders where they did lots of problems, the highlight being Pump traverse V4, successfully traversed by Nick, Nev and Simon. There were also some nice problems bordering on high ball but with pretty decent holds at the top. Verity and Debbie soon got bored of the macho fun and walked in to Capel Curig for a coffee. The macho MMCers got bored pretty soon afterwards and joined Debbie and Verity for a coffee before heading home.
Rob set off running up Snowdon from the Llanberis side on Sunday morning but once out of sight gave up running and strolled leisurely round the lake with Meggie (who says 'thanks' to all those people who she begged/stole from all weekend). |
